KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV/AP) -

A 28-year-old Arizona man wanted in connection with a double-homicide in Tucson has been arrested in Missouri after federal investigators tracked him to a Kansas City hotel.

The U.S. Marshals Service and local police found Michael Leday near the Crown Lodge Hotel in Kansas City about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, but he became suspicious and fled on foot.

The Marshals Service says he was apprehended after "an intense 30-minute foot pursuit through heavily wooded areas and creek beds."

Leday was apprehended without incident.

Approximately 40 law enforcement personnel consisting of U.S. Marshals and Kansas City police tactical squads, K-9 handlers and their K-9s and air support were utilized in Leday's apprehension.

According to deputies, Leday did not alter his appearance while maintaining his fugitive status.

"The critical relationships which exist between the U.S. Marshals Service, Kansas City and Independence Police Departments and other local partners have been very successful in all of our efforts to combat violent crime. This arrest is another example of the effectiveness of those partnerships. Fugitives will seek no refuge in our district due to the great work by our partners in Kansas City and the surrounding region," U.S. Marshal Alfred Lomax said.

Tucson police announced last week that they were searching for Leday, who may have known one of the victims.

Police say 32-year-old Patrick Balbastro and his girlfriend stopped their car in a neighborhood to help 46-year-old Cindy Burnett, who was being assaulted by a man.

The fight escalated and police say the attacker got into Balbastro's car and repeatedly ran over the three people.

Balbastro was fatally injured and Burnett died at the scene. Balbastro's girlfriend remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Leday is awaiting extradition back to Tucson.
