BATESVILLE, Ark. (LyonScots.com) – Batesville senior noseguard/defensive tackle Zach Lillard became the 16th commitment to the new Lyon College football program when he officially signed with the four-year institution at a press conference on Wednesday in James C. Becknell Gymnasium.
Zach, the son of Darren and Lisa Lillard, is the third Batesville player to sign with the Lyon program, which is scheduled to begin workouts in September and start intercollegiate play in the Fall of 2015. Lillard follows the addition of the first Pioneer, Garrett Denton, who was the first signee with the program. James Trotter, who played for BHS in 2012, also signed.
As of Wednesday, the Scots have signed 30 players committed to the squad for next fall. Lyon football coach Kirk Kelley expects to sign 60-65 players by the start of fall drills and approximately 100 by the beginning of practice in the fall of 2015.
Lillard is a 6-1, 255-pound athlete who has helped the Pioneers to two consecutive state final appearances. On the academic side, he has been on the Honor Roll each semester.
"I'm very excited about the signing of Zach," said Kelley. "He is a kid that I have watch grow up and he is grown into a great young man. He comes from a great family."
Kelley said Lillard's attributes go much deeper than his play on the field.
"His character alone will bring so much to our program, not to mention his ability as a football player," Kelley continued. "He has size, quickness and tenacity. He will just continue to get better and better, too.
"I always say I want to sign players that will be great role models for my young boys. We just got another one."
