Arkansas State University senior Sharika Nelvis has been named this week's Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week in an announcement made this Wednesday (Jan. 15) by the conference.
The weekly league recognition is the first this season for the All-America sprinter, who achieved such honors three times (Jan. 9 and 30, Feb. 13) during the 2013 indoor season. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Nelvis is a two-time (2012-13) U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Second-Team All-America selection in indoor track. She also was tabbed as the Sun Belt Conference's Most Outstanding Women's Indoor Track Athlete last season as a result being the top scorer at the 2013 SBC Women's Championships (Feb. 24-25) and earned first-team all-league kudos.
Nelvis established three records (school, meet, and facility) in the 55-meter dash at the the Red Wolves' season-opening ASU Kickoff Klassic (Dec. 1) in Jonesboro, Ark. She produced a 6.78 time to win the sprint event and best her 6.86 mark at the 2012 ASU Kickoff Klassic. Nelvis would also claim the top individual honor in the 55-meter hurdles by clocking a 7.79 time. She presently has the top time among the current NCAA-I indoor qualifiers in the 60-meter dash (7.31) and ranks sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.38).
In her A-State career to date, Nelvis has attained Sun Belt weekly accolades on eight occasions. She was a four-time conference weekly award recipient between the indoor and outdoor seasons for the 2012-13 campaign.
Nelvis along with selected A-State athletes will be participating in this weekend's (Jan. 17-18) Kentucky Collegiate Track and Field Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The Red Wolves will then host the A-State Invitational on Friday, Jan. 24, at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark., starting at 10 a.m. (CT).
