EASTON, MO (KCTV/AP) -

A Buchanan County, MO, mother is charged with endangering the welfare of a child after her 20-month-old son was killed in a crash.

"My two granddaughters, he used to take their finger and walk them around and those are some of the things I'm going to miss," said Gerald Williams, the victim's grandfather.

They are precious memories the family of 20-month-old Kaiber Williams now cling to.

"I miss watching him come over and climb all over everything," Gerald Williams said.

On the morning of Jan. 6 Kaiber and his mother, 24-year-old Alicca M. Williams, were on Highway C less than two miles from their house when Alicca Williams lost control of her car on an icy road, crossed the center line and hit a Missouri Department of Transportation snow plow head on.

The accident occurred about four miles east of St. Joseph.

"The young boy was in the car, he was not restrained with a proper car seat nor was there one located at the crash site," said Sgt. Sheldon Lyon with the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Kaiber was first taken to a hospital in St. Joseph and then life-flighted to Children's Mercy Hospital where he died.

Friday Alicca Williams was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a felony.

Troopers said Kaiber should have been in a rear-facing car seat in the backseat. They stopped short of saying Kaiber would have survived had he been in the proper restraint, but did say both Alicca Williams and the driver of the snow plow walked away.

"I'm not surprised that she's been charged, but in one sense I feel sorry for her because she lost her child. I don't know how I would react to that," said neighbor Jean Gregory.

Alicca Williams' family is angry about the charges. They insist there's no worse punishment than a broken heart.

"There's nothing these people can do to that little girl that she's not doing to herself already," Gerald Williams said.

The highway patrol also cited Alicca Williams for driving on a suspended or revoked license. She was arrested Friday on the charge and remained in custody that night.

Online court records do not indicate if she has an attorney.
