Volunteers celebrate MLK Day with food drive

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- AmeriCorp members with the North Jonesboro Neighborhood Initiative had a food drive Saturday at Bills Fresh Market on Red Wolf Blvd in honor of the MLK holiday.

Volunteers collected cans that will be donated to local food pantries. The can drive kicked off the organization's weekend of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The group will also sponsor a letter writing campaign for the troops on Monday.

Volunteer Tawuana Hooper said it's important to remember Dr. King's life and his dream.

"We are doing this during the Martin Luther Kind holiday, we are trying to celebrate and give back to everybody in the community..those that are in need of food," Hooper said.

Monday is the last day to make a donation.
