ASU Women's Tennis competes in second day of FGCU Invitational

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State women's tennis team racked up four more victories on the second day of competition at the Florida Gulf Coast University Spring Invitational at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. Sunday.

After failing to pick up a win in doubles Saturday, the Red Wolves went 2-0 in doubles competition Sunday.  The A-State pair of Janie Nowland/Tamara Slijepcevic posted a 6-3 win over Northwestern State's Aliona Ladutska/Amy Williams, while Arkansas State's Sofia Krsmanovic/Chiara Stefanov were victorious over Iowa State's pair of Caroline Andersen/Emma Waites by a score of 6-1.

Stefanov also proved to be a bright spot in singles play by recording an impressive victory over Iowa State's Andersen by a score of 7-5, 6-2.  Jess Heeps-Eriksen had a successful day by recording a 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory over Florida Atlantic's Lyndsey Boos.

Slijepcevic fell short in her attempt to get to the finals of Flight A by losing a very tough match to Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina 7-6 (5), 6-3.  Julie Gauguery lost to FGCU's Elizabeth Means 6-0, 6-2 to fall short of appearing in the Flight B finals.  In the Flight A backdraw, Biljana Miloshevska and Nowland lost matches to members from the host school Florida Gulf Coast, while Victoria Pisani and Krsmanovic also failed to advance in their flight's respective backdraw.

"Chiara played a great singles match today and I'm very proud of her," A-State women's tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said.  "Overall, we didn't play very well in singles and we have to show a willingness to work harder so we can get better.  Doubles was a lot better today and I'm looking for a day of consistent performance in both singles and doubles tomorrow."

The Red Wolves will close out the three-day even Monday.  Action from the FGCU Tennis Complex is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. (CT).
