Jonesboro Alderman resigns

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - City Alderman Mikel Fears resigned at Tuesday night's city council meeting, citing state law and his "integrity" as reasons for stepping down.

He served as the Alderman for Ward 6.

During the meeting, he told fellow council members moved to Sage Meadows after he was elected and learned that even though he owned property in his ward, he had to reside at that address.

He says after discovering that law, he consulted with an attorney and decided it was best to step down. "I wanted to maintain my integrity and felt that was the right decision," Fears told Region 8 News after the city council meeting.

Fears said his former constituents can expect him to remain active around Jonesboro. "I'm still going to be involved with different aspects of the city and continue to keep making Jonesboro a better place." Fears added.

Fears isn't sure what he'll do next, but he said he's looking toward the future. "I promise I'll be in some type of a role."
