Metro Council approves moving Sunday beer sales up to 10 a.m.

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville residents will now be able to buy beer two hours earlier on Sundays.

Metro Council approved a bill on Tuesday night that allows grocery stores and markets to sell beer starting at 10 a.m.

Councilman Buddy Baker, one of the sponsors of the amendment, said previously that the legislation puts grocery stores on a more level playing field with restaurants and sporting venues that sell beer at 10 a.m. on Sundays.

Metro Council also passed an expansion of the backyard chickens ordinance Tuesday night. The new version allows homeowners in Davidson County to have hens as long as they pay $25 for a permit. Roosters are not allowed.

Metro's decision expands an ordinance passed in 2012 that came with a two-year expiration.

The approved legislation applies in all Metro districts, including the eight districts which opted out of the 2012 chicken ordinance.
