All lanes of I-91 open following bridge repairs

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

All lanes of Interstate 91 in Northampton reopened after Department of Transportation (DOT) workers finished bridge repairs around 2 p.m.

Traffic was backed up for miles while DOT workers repaired a bridge that was build in 1965.

More than 25,000 vehicles pass over the bridge every day. DOT workers repaired the asphalt at the bridge joints as older bridges are more susceptible to damage from weather extremes.

All Massachusetts bridges are inspected every two years and some as often as every six months.

Route 5 northbound in Holyoke served as a quicker alternate route.

CBS 3's Bill Rapp will be live with more information at 4 p.m.
