Army to Try Southeast Missouri-Based Soldier on Manslaughter Charges for Death of Iraqi Citizen

OCTOBER 20, 2004 - Posted at 7:36 a.m. CDT

FORT HOOD, TX - Trial is scheduled in one week at Fort Hood, Texas, for a southeast Missouri soldier charged with manslaughter in the alleged drowning of an Iraqi civilian.

Sergeant First Class Tracy Perkins, of Scott City, also faces courtmartial charges of aggravated assault, conspiracy and lying to Army investigators.

The 33-year-old Missourian and another member of the Fourth Infantry Division, 24-year-old Lieutenant Jack Saville of Virginia, were arraigned yesterday.  They're accused of pushing the Iraqi and his cousin off a bridge in Samarra, Iraq.  The incident in January allegedly was punishment for violating curfew.

The assault charges pertain to the cousin, who survived.

Saville is to go on trial in January.
