CARTHAGE, TX (KSLA) -

An Ark-La-Tex high school junior says she was sent home from school because of her hair color. She says she doesn't think the color is distracting, and is shocked they are making her change it.

Devin Gonzalez is a straight-A student at Elysian Fields High School.

"I got sent home because my hair is red" Gonzalez says.

She should have been spending her Friday in class, but instead she spent it at Signatures Salon getting her hair dyed in the hopes that her principal would lift her suspension.

Gonzalez says her hair has been this color for more than a year. That changed Wednesday when she was sent home from school because her hair color did not meet the dress code.

"I was allowed to come back Thursday because I attempted to dye my hair a different color, but it didn't work obviously," she said.

She says the Elysian Fields principal sent her home again on Friday. The district says student hair must be a natural color.

"It can't be two-toned and it has to be a natural color. I don't feel like it's a vulgar color, I don't feel like it's a bad color or anything" Gonzalez says.

After a two day suspension, Gonzales is hoping her hair won't stand in the way of her education again.

"I do volleyball, softball, I'm in FFA, OAP, I'm in one of the plays, I tutor little kids at the elementary on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, I don't feel like I'm a trouble maker. I freak out when I get a B," Gonzalez says.

Devin says she isn't happy about it, but hopes this new color will not cause any more trouble. KSLA News 12 called Elysian Fields Independent School District to get a comment on this and they have yet to call back.
