A-State baseball holds first practice

JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Arkansas State University baseball squad resumed full team workouts Friday at Tomlinson Stadium for the 2014 season.

Despite the colder temperatures, the Red Wolves baseball took to the field for its first official since returning from the fall break. A-State went through a light scrimmage at Kell Field and had workouts and other drills indoors as the afternoon marked three weeks until the season opener with Miami (Ohio) on Feb. 14 in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves returns 16 lettermen from last year's squad, including seniors Dustin Jones, Bradley Wallace, Zach Maggio, Cody Woodhouse and Morgan Croft. Wallace is coming off a career year in which he went 5-2 with 78 strikeouts in 14 games and helped the Arkansas State pitching break the all-time school record for strikeouts in a single season at 487.

In addition, the team has 17 newcomers to the squad who are expected to make contributions this season. The Red Wolves are scheduled to scrimmage Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. each day, weather permitting.

Arkansas State will enjoy nine straight contests at home to open the 2013 season, hosting Miami (Ohio) for a three-game set on opening weekend Feb. 14-16. The Red Wolves will clash with in-state opponent Arkansas-Monticello Feb. 18 in a midweek matchup, followed by a four-game set with Illinois Feb. 21-23 that includes a doubleheader on Feb. 22. The home stand will conclude with a midweek series against Southeast Missouri Feb.25 at Tomlinson Stadium.
