Assembly launches campaign against proposed city ‘St. George’

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A newly formed organization will be holding a meeting for all the public to attend in order to band together to campaign against the proposal of the breakaway city ‘St. George'.

The assembly will be on Tuesday, January 28th from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the St. George Catholic Church located at 7808 St. George Drive in Baton Rouge.

The Residents Against the Breakaway is a brand new nonprofit organization that will be spearheading the campaign called ‘Better Together'.  Spokesperson Kathleen Randall stated that its purpose is to create a citizen-led movement to oppose the St. George incorporation and hold the city-parish together.

"The silent majority on this issue has been silent for too long," said Randall. "It is time for us to do the work we need to do…"

According to Randall, the event will include the debut of new public information on how the proposed city would affect the parish's economy, taxes, public services, and schools.  According to the group's campaign website, the new city would do the following:

  • Remove $85 million in tax revenue from East Baton Rouge Parish.
  • Create an annual city-parish budget deficit of $53 million (20% of the entire budget).
  • Result in tax increases and/or service cuts for ALL residents of East Baton Rouge Parish, including southeast residents, to make up for revenue losses and create duplicate municipal services.
  • Pose a threat to the economic stability of the metro region.
  • Increase distrust and division across our community.

So far, the group has almost 3,000 followers on Facebook. Anyone planning to attend the event should RSVP at www.bettertogetherbr.org . You can also sign a petition and request a ‘Better Together' yard sign at this website.
