Kids rally for a smoke-free Waffle House

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Some young local activists lined up in front of Waffle House in Biloxi Sunday afternoon to urge the company to implement a nationwide policy to ban smoking in the facility.

Cleaner Air for Kids is trying to promote awareness about the dangers of second hand smoke.

The President of Youth Advocacy for Cleaner Air, 14-year-old Hailey Hester, put together the rally after she says complaints about smoking at Waffle House have not been addressed.

"I feel discriminated. I don't feel like I have equal rights like everyone else does, because I can't sit in there. I'll get sick, I'll have to go to the hospital," said Hailey.

Cleaner Air for Kids says approximately 75 percent of Waffle Houses in Mississippi are already smoke-free.

The group just wants the company to take the extra step and go 100 percent smoke-free.

"If you want to smoke, you shouldn't subject other people to the same thing. So this is really important to get the word out," said protester Bryce Moore.

"We want to stop it. Not only in Mississippi, but nationwide. It's going to take a long time, but it'll be worth it," protester Payton Nichols adds.

Hailey wants to get more kids involved who feel that they don't have a voice.

"That's what we're trying to show, that we have a voice and we want change," Hailey said.

Cleaner Air for Kids is a grassroots organization that advocates for smoke-free environments for kids.

The group plans to continue rallying to raise awareness of the secondhand smoke problem.
