Trio arrested for multiple Algiers vehicle burglaries

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -- New Orleans Police have arrested two men and a juvenile wanted for multiple vehicle burglaries. Police arrested 18-year-old Rikki Newell, 18-year-old Dwayne Reed and a 16-year-old juvenile late Saturday night.

Police say that officers in Algiers were alerted at 11:50 p.m. Saturday of a vehicle burglary that was taking place in the 2500 block of Bristol Place. Responding officers arrived on scene and quickly took the 16-year-old into custody. Newell and Reed took off running and were both later found, by a K-9 unit.

Newell was booked with four counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle and illegal possession of a stolen firearm. Investigators later learned that Newell may have been responsible for additional car burglaries in Algiers. Reed was also booked with four counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle in addition to a warrant out of Baton Rouge for alleged rape. The 16-year-old juvenile was booked with four counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle and possession of imitation narcotics.

"While most of us were sleeping last night, several New Orleans police officers were chasing three suspects, setting up a perimeter and working with our K-9 unit to locate and arrest these men, one of whom was armed with an illegal firearm", said Superintendent Ronal Serpas. "I want to thank these officers for acting as swiftly as they did to protect the residents of Algiers. And I commend the neighbor who called 9-1-1 as soon as she saw suspicious activity happening on her block.  It's when the people of New Orleans work with their police department that we significantly increase our chances of making speedy arrests in cases like these", Serpas said.
