JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) has named Kristina Aubert and Richard Chavez both of Arkansas State University as this week's (Jan. 29) recipients of the conference's weekly indoor track and field award in an announcement made this Wednesday (Jan. 29) by the league office.
Aubert and Chavez were among four indoor track athletes to attain the weekly conference accolades for this week. Aubert was tabbed the SBC's Women's Track Athlete of the Week while Chavez claimed Field Athlete of the Week honors on the men's side.
Aubert, a redshirt junior from Crystal Lake, Ill., ran a 9:59.22 time to win the 3,000 meters at last Friday's (Jan. 24) A-State Invitational (1/24) in Jonesboro, Ark., and was the only runner in the event to finish under the 10-minute mark. Aubert's performance presently represents the best time in the conference indoor season and ranks 122nd overall on the NCAA Division I qualifying list.
A senior, Chavez earned first-place honors with a personal-best throw of 65-06.25/19.98m in the shot put at the A-State Invitational and finished fifth in the weight throw as a result of a 62-07.25/19.08m toss. A native of Clovis, N.M., Chavez's distance in the shot put is presently the second best among the Sun Belt Conference's top efforts and his performance in the weight throw is third on the conference leaders chart to date. Nationally, Chavez ranks sixth in the shot put and is listed 49th in weight throw following his two field events at last Friday's home meet.
Both A-State teams are in action this weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) at the Indiana University Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
