WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

People in Waveland were "throwing down" oysters for a good cause Saturday. Hope Haven Children Services hosted its second annual Oyster Throw down competition at Knock Knock bar and restaurant. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales and a silent auction went to Hope Haven.

The competition awarded prizes for best oyster dish, and best decorated booth. Hope Haven director, Terry Latham, said he was excited about the competition.

"We've got a half dozen teams out here who think that they can cook the very best oysters on the coast. And, you know, I've tasted, and they're right. There's some good oysters here," said Latham.

There were oyster dishes of all kinds, ranging from oyster lasagna to oyster fritters. About 500 people came to the event, and more than $2,000 were raised. Latham said that every cent made from the event went to Hope Haven to help abused and neglected children and families in need.

According to Latham, Hope Haven has housed about 3,000 children over the 19 years of its existence. He says they have also distributed over $10 million to help those in need. On May 10, the organization will have its Battle for the Paddle Crawfish Cook-Off at the Bay St. Louis Fair Grounds.
