(WMC-TV) - Cancer patients are hoping the man accused of stealing their identities will find his way back behind bars.

Mareco Bell is out of jail after paying a reduced bond. He is accused of stealing the identities of cancer patients in Memphis.

Collector Larry Dancy's hobby hit a lull when he took ill.

"I had Hodgkins Lymphoma, which was in a lymph node," said Dancy. "It's, it's not a pleasant experience."

But that is not all. In addition to fighting cancer, his identity was also stolen.

In August 2013, investigators raided a Cordova home and found several fake IDs, a dozen prepaid credit cards, and ten medical files, one of which belonged to Dancy. It came from the cancer clinic where he was a patient.

Mareco Bell was arrested on identity theft charges.

"That anybody could have that little compassion for their fellow human being is hard to comprehend," said Dancy.

Now, a Shelby County Grand Jury has indicted Bell.

Investigators say his victims were all cancer patients, some recovering, some in remission, all upset.

"Naw, I couldn't believe it. It was such a shock. At first I said, 'Why would you want take somebody's identity from a hospital?' That doesn't make sense," said Gloria Exum, who also had her identity stolen.

Arien Firmer asked that Action News 5 not show her face. She says she has not trusted anyone since her identity was stolen.

"All my information. Everything. My social security number. My birthday. All my credit history. All my doctor's records," she said. "Everybody there is dying. Got cancer. Got bad things. And I mean it's scary. It's terrible."

Besides state charges, federal investigators are also working on the case.

Bell faces prison if convicted.

"I'd like to see the guy get some serious time because I think he deserves it," said Dancy.

Time, says Dancy, that would give him the chance to get back to these timeless items on his shelf.

Action News 5's Nick Kenney spoke with many of the identity theft victims Monday. They say the clinic got them some protection and has been cooperative.

The incident report lists a second suspect but there is no record of her arrest.
