Apartment fire forces 3 families into the cold

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – At least one family is homeless after a fire at the Hickory Hills Apartments in the 3400 block of Graceland Drive.

The fire started just before 1 Tuesday morning.  A large response from the Memphis Fire Department kept the fire from getting out of control.

Officials believe the fire began in a downstairs water heater and then spread upstairs. Four apartment units had fire and smoke damage.

Larry Woods is a member of one of the families that had to flee their home.

"I feel blessed that we did all make it out by the grace of God, we couldn't see anything," Woods said. "Without Him we wouldn't be here!"

No one was hurt, but the fire did force three families out of their homes. Two of those families were able to return to their homes, which only sustained some smoke damage.

The Woods family is getting assistance from the Red Cross.
