WAVE 3 Editorial - February 4, 2014: Raising minimum wage
By Ken Selvaggi WAVE 3 Vice President & General Manager
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The speed of change surges faster
each day in all facets of our life.
Not so for those making the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. That
hasn't changed in five years in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
It may soon, as the Kentucky legislature plans to vote on
raising the minimum wage 95 cents an hour July 1 of this year, an additional 95
cents an hour July 1 of next year and topping out at $10.10 an hour on July 1,
We encourage them to do so and applaud the University of
Louisville for already raising their minimum wage to $10 an hour three months
Kentucky would join 21 other states that have minimum wages
above the federal minimum wage.
Last month, Ohio raised the minimum wage to $7.95 an hour
and Missouri raised it to $7.50 an hour. Neighbor Illinois has a minimum wage
of $8.25 an hour.
We encourage Indiana's legislature to also give strong
consideration to increasing the minimum wage above $7.25 an hour.
If the Kentucky legislature approves the increase, more than
600,000 Kentuckians would benefit over the next three years.
