NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The US Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a boating class on Saturday, February 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The class will be held at the North Myrtle Beach Community Center on Possum Trot Road.

The course, About Boating Safely, is certified by South Carolina DNR and graduates will be awarded the South Carolina Boater Education Card.

Boaters under 16 years of age are required by law to pass an approved boating education course before operating, without supervision, a personal watercraft (jet ski) or a boat powered by a motor of 15 horsepower or more.

The boating course is designed for boaters of all ages and experience with an emphasis on recreational boating safety is taught by trained US Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors. Instructions will include: what to do before getting on the water along with the basics of protecting and handling the boat or personal watercraft safely. Instruction will also include waterways navigation, safety equipment, boating problems, emergencies and legal requirements for boating in South Carolina.

Course fee is $30 per person or $40 for two family members sharing the same boating manual. Students under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult enrolled in the class. A typical Boater Education Course lasts 6-8 hours with exam time, depending on the class location and instructor.Snacks, drink and lunch are provided; there is no time to leave for lunch. Persons with special dietary needs should bring their own food/beverages.
