Walthall fire death being investigated

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -

A mother is dead and her son is being held in the Walthall County Jail following a fire at the family home Monday.

According to radio station WTYL and confirmed by family, Brian E. Fortenberry of 26 Son Thompson Road, is in the Walthall County Jail on an investigative hold following a Monday fire at his mother's mobile home in the Little Improve Community.

59-year-old Lizzie Ree Buckhalter Fortenberry was missing from her residence and neighbors became concerned about her welfare following the fire. Family reported that her keys, purse and other belongings were in her car parked near the residence.

Fortenberry's body was discovered by Walthall County authorities some distance away from the burned out trailer. Her body was sent for autopsy, and officials are not releasing a cause of death until results are completed.

Brian E. Fortenberry was booked into the county jail early Tuesday morning. No official charges have been filed in connection with his mother's death.

Family members said Tuesday that Lizzie was a loving mother and grandmother who worked to provide for her family. They're asking for prayers and support as they grieve Lizzie's loss.
