HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Trauma Advisory Committee determined in mid January that Wesley Medical Center did not meet the requirements to participate as a level three trauma center mainly, because of the lack of full time orthopedic coverage.

The committee also instructed Wesley to notify the Southeast Trauma Care Region and all Pre Hospital providers who transport patients of the lack of trauma center designation.

Tuesday afternoon, Wesley CEO Mike Neuendorf said the hospital is still working through the application process.

Neuendorf said the discussion is about the Health Department's interpretation that an Orthopedic surgeon cannot cover two facilities simultaneously.

He said Wesley is working to balance the coverage requirements among the providers to create a win-win for patients.
