Families coping with power outages

POINSETT COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – According to Craighead Electric Cooperative, several homes in Craighead, Poinsett and Crittenden counties are still without power.

One family has been waiting since 11:30 Tuesday morning for their power to turn back on. However, they've been patiently waiting knowing crews are out working hard to restore it.

"After it got real dark last night, we just went to bed because you can't read or anything," said Phyllis Hurt.

Although, they were lucky enough to miss out on power outages back in December. This isn't the first time the Hurts have experienced a power outage in their home.

"In December I think we had one of the lines freeze but that's about it. This is the first time it's gone off like this since 2009," said Hurt.

Hurt said at least back in 2009, she was able to eat more than just a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

"This is the first year I got a new stove and I got an electric one, so this is the first year I haven't been able to cook," said Hurt.

In the mean time, while crews continue to work around the clock, Hurt said she and her husband plan to wait it out.

"We've got plenty and my daughter has made sure we have plenty of stuff to eat," said Hurt. We'll just keep waiting and the good Lord will be with us."

In April, Williams Baptist cross country runner Alex Van Herpen competed in the prestigious Boston Marathon. An incredible feat. Learning about his path to get there, it stopped me in my tracks. Five years ago Alex was bound to a wheelchair. in January of 2011, he was diagnosed with strep throat, the flu and mono all within a two week period. For five months Alex was bound to a wheel chair. One day he just got up and walked. Medical experts had no explanation for any of it.  ...
