Region 8 program launching to help offenders stay out of jail

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The rate of Arkansas offenders repeating crimes and going back to jail is decreasing, according to a report from the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

Certified drug and alcohol counselor Terrell Jenkins is launching the nonprofit organization, The Advantage Program (TAP), in Region 8 to help offenders stay out of jail and drug rehabilitation.

"You got individuals that go to treatment and get out or they go to jail and get out and continue to do the same things," Jenkins said.  "When they get out of jail or get on probation or parole they can come for some life skills to help them survive in society."

Jenkins' staff of counselors will teach life skills such as conflict resolution, anger management, goal setting and leadership.

The staff will also provide practical advice.  "I got in the program to learn how to manage money and it has helped me out a lot," said Shirley Buchanan, who has completed four weeks of the eight-week program.

Buchanan decided to go through the program with her daughter who was referred through drug rehab. "She is more focused and more aggressive toward the goal that she is setting now. So she has come a long way. I'm very proud of her."

The Advantage Program is housed at the E Boone Watson Community Center in Jonesboro until the official launch on April 1 at 3259 East Nettleton, Suite 1.

For more information about The Advantage Program call (870) 919-7577 or (870) 919-3881.
