UV technology helps hospital destroy dangerous germs

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A robot may be changing the way hospitals wipe out germs, and it's being used in one medical center in Middle Tennessee.

The machine uses ultraviolet light to destroy dangerous bacteria.

"It kills the bacteria or spores that are in the room that can be on any high-touch surfaces, like a bed rail or remote control, that people can pass back and forth to each other," said Thomas Ozburn, CEO of TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center.

And it takes just a few minutes to clean a room.

Hospital officials say the technology won't replace anyone on their staff. It will just help in their ongoing efforts to keep the hospital clean and germ free.

"It can go into any room - ER, patient room - or anywhere that you would want any surface area to be cleaned," Ozburn said.

The robot can help wipe out bacteria and viruses that the human eye can't see, and it's easy to move. The goal is to lessen the spread of things like the norovirus, flu and staph bacteria, including MRSA.

The folks at TriStar Southern Hills say they are the first hospital in the Midstate to use this robot. They say infection rates have dropped at other hospitals across the country where the UV technology is in place.
