(WMC-TV) - Parents and teachers made their plea Monday in the last public meeting concerning proposed Shelby County School District school closures in Memphis.

Both Riverview Middle and the school right behind it, Riverview Elementary, remain on the chopping block.

"I had grandchildren that went here, great grandchildren that went [there]. My daughter went [there]. All of them went [there]," said neighbor Mary Ford.

Ford fears what might happen to the surrounding area if both buildings are empty.

"They close this down then it's gonna run down and look bad and everything else," she said.

Administrators say Riverview is on the rebound considering from where it started. Some of the new teachers brought in after the district cleaned house say they need more time to turn things around.

"I want my students to be better than me. I'm teaching the next lawyer, the next doctor, the next mayor," said Riverview teacher Sherika Wright.

Riverview Middle did not initially land on the proposed closure list, but officials added it after Carver High School was removed. The district decided to make Carver a 6th through 12th grade school following a grassroots campaign to keep it open.

All three schools are dramatically under-enrolled, which is data board members cannot ignore in making their decision.

"So it's not emotion," said SCS board member Teresa Jones. "Although it's difficult not to hear and feel it."

Bard members could make decisions soon regarding 13 proposed closures; they admit it will be difficult to overlook all of the emotion.
