Name released in fatal Nucor Steel accident

Posted: Updated:

BLYTHEVILLE, AR  (KAIT/AP) – An employee of Nucor Steel in Hickman has died after an accident involving a train derailment, according to an incident report filed by the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office.

The report stated an employee went missing sometime before 4:15 Tuesday morning. A crew, checking on 48-year old man Thomas Dazey, found him trapped by the train, which appeared to have derailed.

Officers stated the man was riding on front of one train, which is allowed by policy, when it derailed. The man was found with head injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities say Dazey suffered a fatal head injury when he got caught between his train and another train.

Nucor Steel Arkansas Vice President and General Manager Sam Commella says mill operations were suspended immediately after the incident. Commella says the company is working with local, state and federal authorities to determine what caused the accident.
Officials say Dazey had worked at Nucor for 18 years.

His body has been taken to Little Rock for an autopsy.
