The Arkansas State baseball program held the 12th annual "Grand Slam Fan Fest" Tuesday night, Feb. 11 at the Convocation Center.
The event started out with a chance for fans to get A-State players' autographs, get a pitch timed on the radar gun, and participate in a silent auction that featured an array of items including A-State gear, memorabilia from former Red Wolves, memorabilia from current and past MLB stars, food, household items, and much more.
The function continued with a meal provided by Arkansas Distributing Company, Coaches' Restaurant and Catering, Front Page Café, Gene Vance, and Western Sizzlin'. The 2014 Red Wolves were then introduced on a team video that featured several skits involving team members, coaches, and support staff. Honorary alumni Jim Callaway was introduced and made several remarks before head coach Tommy Raffo spoke and awarded the John Knight Baseball Manager's Scholarship to team managers Miles Clover, Chris Dean, and Brock Rogers.
Current minor leaguers and former A-State players Jacob Lee and Daniel Wright, along with current minor leaguer and Jonesboro native Delta Cleary took the stage for a question and answer session. All three shared their experiences and memories with the crowd.
The live auction featured items such as a Stan Musial signed bat, a Lou Brock autographed jersey, a Rod Carew signed bat, a VIP trip to a St. Louis Cardinals game, and much more. The night also featured a celebrity dunk where A-State fans had an opportunity to bid on chances to dunk members of the Red Wolves' coaching staff and administration as part of the festivities.
The 2014 Arkansas State baseball season is set to begin Feb. 14 at 6 p.m., when the Red Wolves take on the RedHawks of Miami (Ohio) at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field in the first of a three-game series.
