LARUE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas city was on edge and an escaped Georgia inmate who showed up in Henderson County Friday was still on the loose Sunday. Police say Chad Dasher is on the run after escaping from a Georgia prison alongside Raymond Smith. Smith was caught and is being held in the Navarro County Jail, but police say Dasher stole a car sometimes this morning and fled. That car was stolen from a residence on the 15000 block of County Road 4325.

It’s quiet out here. Birds chirping and water trickling from fountains are the sound track to this countryside oasis. The peacefulness is exactly why the Pirkles left a big city behind. But, Saturday night, the quiet was shattered.

“I kind of just looked around and felt this feeling that something just didn’t feel right,” Wylie Pirkle who lives in LaRue said.

That’s why he said he locked all of the doors, brought the dogs in, and secured his home.

“I spent the night, you know, awake with a gun across my lap,” he said.

His wife tells KLTV she had nightmares about Chad Dasher’s face all night. They had seen the police, the search, and heard a man was on the loose, but it was their gut instincts that tipped them off most.

“The next morning I went up to the other house, to the guest house, and I’ve got a suburban up there and it was gone,” Pirkle described.

That car was parked beside a carport and Wylie said he thought he heard a car engine around 2:00a.m.

Police said Dasher, considered armed and dangerous, stole that suburban and drove off.

“I know how bad everybody wanted to grab this guy where nobody else down the road would get hurt, so it’s kind of a mixed emotion,” he explained. “But for us, it was probably the best thing that could have happened, you know, that he went ahead and took a suburban and left.”

They said the suburban is a small loss compared to the peace and security they moved all the way here for.

“The sheriff’s department did a great job of notifying everybody, but it really doesn’t solve that feeling inside that all this was so close that some horrible things could have happened,” he explained.

Officials said they think Dasher is long gone, so for now, the Pirkles are trying to focus on the quiet.

“We’re just lucky that that’s all it was,” he said. “We’re going go on down the road.”

Police are asking for any tips in locating that stolen car.

It is a 1999 silver Chevrolet Suburban with the license plate numbers 94XJS5. If you see this car you are asked to call your local law enforcement.
