Texarkana man charged with DUI after rear-ending police car

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

A Texarkana, Arkansas man is charged with DUI after police say he ran into the back of a police car on Friday afternoon.

Texarkana, Texas police say it happened on Saturday around 5 p.m. in the 2700 block of Richmond Road. Sgt. William McAnally was reportedly patrolling the area when his patrol unit was struck from behind at the intersection of Richmond Rd. and Gibson Ln.

Officers were called to the scene and saw that a white car had driven into the back of Sgt. McAnally's patrol vehicle. When they made contact with the driver of that vehicle, they say they could smell "the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

Police say 43-year-old Jackie Benton failed a field sobriety test and was determined to be intoxicated. Benton was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Sgt. McAnally was not reported to be seriously injured.
