NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - One man is dead following an industrial accident at Arkansas Steel Associates in Newport, according to Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas.
According to Lucas, Michael Myers, 49, of Bald Knob was found dead at the plant. One other person was sent to the hospital to be treated for shock.
Lucas said crews were called to the scene just before one Wednesday afternoon.
Myers died when a kettle of liquid steel spilled in the melt shop of the facility. Lucas stated the accident happened when a cable on the crane system broke as the kettle was being moved.
He said an estimated 38 tons of liquid may have spilled.
Lucas said after the spill, the facility caught fire. Crews with the Newport Fire Department, Diaz and Grubbs Fire Departments responded to the scene.
This is not the first incident to happen at Arkansas Steel.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a worker died in 1999, when he was hit by molten metal, igniting his clothing. The company was cited for two serious violations following that accident.
Before that, they were cited for one serious violation in 1991 after an employee was run over by a forklift.
