USC men's club hockey team two wins away from national title

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

You may be surprised a Midlands hockey team has a shot at a national championship.

Hockey in South Carolina doesn't rank high on the sport's popularity list; in fact, players on this Gamecocks team understand most students at USC probably do not know a hockey team exists.

It's not Division I athletics, it's a club sport. They travel to play other teams similar to Division I.

However, it's not that simple. Each player on the roster pays at least $2,000 to play and to cover expenses. Also, practice times are very late at night.

The love to play hockey is strong for these Gamecocks.

This weekend, at the Plex Indoor Sports and Ice Complex in Irmo, USC can advance to ACHA Division III Nationals in Florida for the first time ever if they win two south regional playoffs games.
