11 arrests made in Seneca Co. heroin trafficking ring

SENECA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Heroin trafficking has skyrocketed in the area, but law enforcement agencies are fighting back.

The Seneca County Drug Task Force-METRICH Enforcement Unit officers say they're sending a message that all heroin traffickers will be caught.

On Friday, 11 arrests were made as part of a drug round-up. WTOL 11 cameras were rolling as they walked in in handcuffs. Police say they want all criminals to hear their message loud and clear.

"We're going to be coming after them," said Seneca County Sheriff Bill Eckelberry. "If you come into Seneca County to sell or to buy, look over your shoulder because we're going to be coming after you."

The METRICH Unit arrested 11 street and mid-level dealers in connection with drug trafficking and theft. Police say they've been investigating these people since last June. The investigations led to a total of 24 counts of trafficking heroin, six counts trafficking cocaine, one count of theft of prescription drugs and one count of retaliation.

According to officers, there were 16 suspects pursued, which means there are five still at large.

The METRICH Unit has already had 41 drug cases this year.

"That's one for one, almost," said Tiffin Police Chief Fred Stevens. "One case for every day this year. Our METRICH, from what we've seen in the past from our unit, that's very high."

The county prosecutor Derek Devine says heroin has taken over everything in regard to drug trafficking use and abuse.

"It's something that just blows people away," he said. "People have become addicted and they can't get off of it. They can't quit and it ruins their lives."

Seneca County residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to their local law enforcement agencies or the drug task force hotline at 877-446-DRUG or 443-0463.
