IRS 'Dirty Dozen' tax scams for 2014

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - The Internal Revenue Service has released its annual list of attempted scams that peak during tax season.

"There's always someone out there trying to scam someone," said Pam Knapp-Carver, American Red Cross Northeast Arkansas Chapter Executive Director.

Impersonating charitable organizations such as American Red Cross is one of the schemes on the list.

"The American Red Cross does not cold call anyone asking for donations. So, if someone calls you and asks you will you make a donation to the American Red Cross, that's not us."

Knapp-Carver recommends asking for verification if someone is seen collecting donations on behalf of Red Cross.

"If they do not have (an American Red Cross third-party agreement form) with them, someone should call the local chapter because the chapter has a copy of it."

Another scam on the list is preparer fraud. According to the IRS, 60% of taxpayers will use professionals this year to prepare their taxes, and need to be careful to choose legitimate tax preparers.  The IRS encourages only using preparers who sign the returns and enter their preparer tax identification numbers.

Also on the list is identity theft, in which a person uses a taxpayer's personal information to file a return and get the tax refund.

Tax fraud was an issue in 2013 at Arkansas State University. The school reported that about 10% of its staff fell victim to tax fraud.
