Sheriff warns residents about new scam

IZARD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – The sheriff's department in one Region 8 county warns residents about a scam.

According to Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence, two people have reported to have received a call from the Publishers Clearing House.

The caller would tell the residents they won a large amount of money. To get the money, the victims were told they needed to purchase a gift card for $500 and provide them with the PIN. They were also asked to meet the caller with another $500. The caller said the money would cover travel expenses that in turn would deliver them with a big win.

The Publishers Clearing House website said they never notify winners by phone or email and that they don't have to pay money to receive a prize.
