Findlay Police get surge of manpower

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Findlay residents should soon see more police out working to keep them safe.

The city's finances have improved enough since the economic downturn that they can now afford to beef up police patrols.

The Vice Narcotics Unit used to include four officers, but was dropped to two in recent years. With the city's projected $1.6 million surplus this year, Police Chief Greg Horne says he is bringing one officer back so the unit can do a better job of combating drug abuse.

The chief says he will also reintroduce his Special Assignment Unit – a team of three officers and a supervisor – which can go out and investigate crime in the neighborhoods and do more community policing. The unit had to be disbanded over the past two years.

"Absolutely it helps make Findlay safer," said Chief Horne. "Helps us be more proactive, and I think for the city, it's going to be a big boost. It's nice to know that the police are there."

The Vice Narcotics Unit will get its additional officer within the next couple weeks, and the Special Assignments Unit will hit streets in May or June.
