Williams Baptist upsets #6 Freed-Hardeman

Posted:
Walnut Ridge, Ark. (WBCEagles.com) – Williams Baptist College's men's basketball team snatched a resounding 84-80 win over the 6th ranked Lions of Freed-Hardeman University on Thursday night, in Henderson, Tenn.  Junior James McClain led the onslaught of Eagles talent when he recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Covington, Tenn. native chipped in with seven assists as well.

Decisive game contributions also came from sophomores E.J. Rucker and Tevin Howard, who added 18 points and 14 points, respectively. Junior Kevin Charles put 12 on the board, as well. WBC's offense allowed the team to lead the entire first half, keeping a five-point advantage at intermission.

The Eagles never trailed until the final 10 minutes of the ball game, when the Lions grew the lead to as many as seven.  Williams came back with less than a minute in the competition, however, and used their great defensive skills to grab 12 steals and walk away with the win.

"This was a huge win for this team, program and Williams Baptist College," said Head Coach Josh Austin.  "I was proud of the character of our team more than anything.  These guys had a difficult task tonight and played their hearts out.  Tonight we played for the name on the front of their jersey instead of the one wearing it."

The Eagles improved their record to 14-13. The regular season comes to an end this Saturday when Williams take on Mid-Continent University.  Tip off is slated for 4:00 pm at Mid-Continent (Ky.).  Thursday's feat also moves WBC to the fifth place in the American-Midwest Conference.
