Plan to find the new superintendent for Phenix City revealed

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

The Phenix City Board of Education is now looking for their new superintendent after a called meeting on February 28.

After the school board bought out Dr. Larry DiChiara's contract in November 2013, the Phenix City Board of Education approved to find the new superintendent. Dr. Rodney Hinton served as the temporary superintendent, but the board and Dr. Hinton are both ready to welcome a new leader.

"Dr. Hinton has done an outstanding job for us," Board President Brad Baker said. "We wanted to keep Dr. Hinton for few more years. I even met with the State Department of Education last week, but we found out that we wouldn't be able to do that. "

By law, Dr. Hinton needed to renew his certificate, but due to time and other factors, the Board decided to find a new superintendent.

"Dr. Hinton would have had to stay two to three years if he tried to get that certificate," Baker said.

The search will officially begin March 5, 2014, and the application will be due April 14, 2013. The starting date for the new superintendent is scheduled for June 1, 2014. The Board has about three months to find their leader.

The superintendent will receive a salary range of $125,000 to $145,000. Members discussed few qualifications of the Superintendent Selection Procedure.

The new leader will be chosen for general fitness and character. He or she must possess high standards of justice, integrity, personal conduct and vision. He or she must also hold at least a master's degree from an Alabama State Department of Education. A Doctorate is preferred but not required. The new superintendent must demonstrate loyalty to the Board of Education.

He or she must also have at least five years of experience in public school work with at least three years of experience as a teacher, supervisor, principal, superintendent or instructor in school administration.

The search and selection procedure will begin March 5, 2014. All applications are due by April 14, 2014. The first starting date for the new selected superintendent is scheduled for June 1, 2014.

More information on the selection procedure as well as an application can be found at www.pcboe.net after March 5, 2014.
