113 year-old woman shares secret to life

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Florence McKoy celebrated her 113th birthday Feb. 23, 2014.

McCoy is a resident at the Poplar Heights Center in Elizabethtown and was born in 1901.

According to her granddaughters, McKoy is in excellent health. In fact, the doctor informed both Annette and Shirley their grandmother is in better health condition then both granddaughters.  

McKoy lived in her own home until she was 103 and then moved into Poplar Heights, where she is beloved by all the nurses. Her granddaughters said she loves it at Poplar Heights and is well looked after.

"She always liked to eat a balance meal. And she was always very up on hygiene and very clean," said her granddaughter Annette Johnson. "I always remember my grandmother like that."

She also attributes her grandmother's long life to her strong relationship with God.

"She is just a giving person. Always very giving. I think that has a lot to do with her being here," said McKoy's granddaughter Shirley Brand. "She loves God, she did the right thing and always treated everyone with kindness and love."

McKoy had only one child but adopted several others and brought them into her home to care for them.

She dedicated her life to giving to others and her said they are so thankful to have her around.
