MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Brittany Ordu is a second grade teacher in Binghampton, whose students have scored 85 percent higher on their tests compared to other kids across the country. Ordu is making a difference one student at a time.

For the past two years, Ordu has taught at Cornerstone Preparatory School. Her style of teaching, referred to as the Doug Lemov method, has paid off.

"MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test maps and plots where a student is according to their grade level," said Ordu. "From kindergarten and all the way up through the fifth have scored 85 percent higher on the MAP test than all other kids in the nation."

Cornerstone Prep has been using this teaching method, which was designed specifically for urban education, for the past six years.

Brittany Ordu learned about it in the Memphis teacher residency program. She is originally from Knoxville, but she went to school at Tennessee Tech, and is now making a difference with children in her Memphis classroom.

"Discipline is a huge part of it, but discipline is encouraged to be used as a tool, rather than a reprimand," she explained. "Here we may or may not receive the perfect model kid, but we have a system set in place to help support them."

It is a support system and teaching method working in Binghampton, benefiting teachers like Brittany Ordu and the kids at Cornerstone Prep.
