Residents urged to prepare for incoming winter weather

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Shelby County by the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say freezing rain will move into the area Sunday afternoon. Up to three quarters of an inch of ice may accumulate, along with two inches of snow.

The Shelby County Office of Preparedness is in around the clock weather mode.

"If you look at the maps it at least indicates a very significant event," said Office of Preparedness Director, Bob Nations.

At a briefing Saturday afternoon, Nations said the command center will be up running while much of the Mid-South prepares for a winter storm.

"It's very important that we began insuring that the public listens to the messages that will be coming out," added Nations.

Nations said sand and salt trucks are ready to roll out at the first sign of precipitation. He is concerned the worst weather will move through overnight Sunday, making for a tricky Monday morning commute.

"If we do get that much ice during this event, we don't want people stranded on the highways."

Nations and his staff are closely monitoring the forecast and he wants residents to do the same.

"Our emergency services coordinators are on alert. Director Bob Nations and his staff at the Shelby County Office of Preparedness are staying in contact with the National Weather Service and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency," said Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

It is likely that the anticipated ice will break tree limbs, which could lead to power outages if power lines snap. Public Works crews are prepared in case of an emergency.

"Our salt and cinder trucks are loaded and ready to respond," said Shelby County Public Works Director Tom Needham.

Memphis Light Gas and Water is monitoring the weather and encourages the public to review their storm preparation guide, found here.
