SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

The historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma is now officially on the National Register of Historic Places.

The church was founded in 1885 and built in 1922, but it's more than just old age that makes the place so historic It was the site of many civil rights movements, including the first mass meeting for voting rights.

The church was listed in the National Register on July 10, 2013. There are now four markers noting the significance of the church. The four markers are for social history, religion, ethnic heritage, and classical revival architecture. The building was designed by an African-American architect.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., first spoke at the tabernacle in October 1963 and again in February 1968 addressing a mass meeting.

People will continue on the historical journey in Selma with the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

Tabernacle will be the site for a mass meeting once again on Thursday, March 6. The 49th anniversary of Bloody Sunday will take place on March 9.

For more information and a full schedule of events, visit the Bridge Crossing Jubilee website.
