Catalytic converter thefts still occur, despite tougher city code

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police need your help finding those responsible for stealing several catalytic converters from a Toledo car lot.

It only takes a few minutes for thieves to slide under, use a saw, and take off with a catalytic converter. Toledo police say that's exactly what happened overnight at First Choice Auto Finance. In this case, the suspect - or suspects - got away with six different catalytic converters.

Local auto supply companies say catalytic converters can be sold from $10 to $350 each.

Whoever took them might have a tough time getting rid of them, since police changes to city code have made this car part tougher to sell. For the most part, it's helped decrease this type of theft.

"In Toledo, if you go to sell a catalytic converter at a scrap yard, that's considered a special purchase item and you're going to have to have some type of proof of ownership on that converter. So because of that law, I think that's made a big impact, big difference," explained Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

Although it's made a big difference, it still happens occasionally. Police recommend keeping an eye out for people parking close to another car and then getting down on the ground to look underneath.
