(WMC-TV) - A shooting sent security guards running through the Oak Court Mall during the dinner hour Thursday evening. Witnesses say the guards told everyone to get inside a store and take cover.

One shopper was critically shot inside the East Memphis mall, according to police. Medical crews pulled the victim out on a stretcher and loaded him into an ambulance.

The victim is in critical condition at The MED.

People took to Twitter to say they took cover in the back of stores in the mall during the shooting. Read the tweets posted during and after the shooting at Oak Court Mall here.

"There was shooting, and everybody started running, and the police came and asked everybody to leave the store," said shopper Anner Turley. "One of the guys had a weapon in his hand, the pistol it was down, and he ran up the escalator. They was laughing like it was a joke."

Investigators say four men were arguing inside the mall, and one of them shot a fifth man.

Police did a sweep of the mall as frightened employees and customers hid inside stores. Officials are still investigating where in the mall the shooting happened.

There was a huge police presence shortly after the shooting at Tuckahoe Street and Goodlett Road, which is about a two-minute drive from the mall. Officers pulled over a car with the four men.

During a search of the car an officer found a gun.

"They blocked off the street ... So everybody was turning around in our driveway, and I, of course, just locked everything down as soon as I could and got [my son] inside, got the dog inside," said resident Amy Davis.

Officers have at least four suspects detained, but did not released their names. No charges were filed as of Thursday evening.

Oak Court Mall released the following statement:

"There was a security incident and one victim was taken to the hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and their family. Customers and employees are leaving the mall, which will be closed for the rest of the evening, while the police further investigate this incident."
