Comptroller candidate concedes, could more races follow suit?

(KLTV) -

State Representative Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville, has conceded the race for Texas Comptroller, but more candidates in state races could follow suit, according to a report by The Texas Tribune.

The Tribune reports an e-mail from a lobbyist suggests an effort may be ongoing to convince three Republican finalists to withdraw from the May primary runoff election.  Three of the state's highest offices are still up for grabs within the Republican Party, including lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller.

The lobbyist wrote only "the hardcore of the hardcore will vote" in the May election.

"Efforts are underway and will intensify to have Lt. Governor Dewhurst, Rep. [Dan] Branch, and Rep. [Harvey] Hilderbran drop out of the races," wrote Robert Miller, chairman of Locke Lord's public law division. "I don't know whether these efforts will succeed, but I am certain that money will rapidly begin moving to [Dan] Patrick, [Ken] Paxton and [Glenn] Hegar. I am in the process of organizing major Houston fundraisers for each of them."

All three campaigns (Dewhurst, Branch and Hilderbran) said they intended on running in the May primary runoff. However, late Friday afternoon, the Associated Press reported Hilderbran has withdrawn from the comptroller's race, leaving State Senator Ken Hegar to secure the Republican nomination.

"I have had the pleasure of knowing and serving with Harvey Hilderbran for many years," Hegar said. "Texans owe Harvey Hilderbran a great deal of gratitude for his years of public service to the state of Texas. Our campaign will now shift focus toward the general election. We are excited to continue to visit with voters and to spread our positive message of job creation and innovation across the state of Texas."

If Dewhurst were to concede, that would set up State Senator Dan Patrick to grab the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor and face Democratic nominee State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, of San Antonio. If Branch were to concede, State Senator Ken Paxton, of McKinney, would receive the nomination and face Democratic nominee Sam Houston, an attorney from Houston.
