SPRINGDALE, AR - A member of the Arkansas Highway Commission says the state can afford more highway construction if it raises registration fees for vehicles.
Commissioner Jonathon Bartlett says the move would raise $100 million over five years. And, he says giving highways a more favorable cut of the tire and automobile battery sales would raise as much as $40 million.
Highway commission member Madison Murphy says he spoke with Governor Huckabee about the fee increases, but no formal proposals have been made yet. It would be up to the Legislature to raise the fees. The General Assembly goes into session in January.
