Mayor Wharton says cleaning up the smaller scale blight is something everyone can help to do, and it would contribute to fixing the overall problem.

"This is something I've been dreaming of for a long, long time," said the mayor.

On Monday, Wharton announced a spring cleaning weekend for April 25 through April 27, which is meant to bring together scores of volunteers.

"We'd like at least 10,000," said Wharton.

From schools, businesses, communities, and faith-based organizations, volunteers will hit the streets in an effort to make as many neighborhoods as they can clean, safe, vibrant, and blight-free.

"We believe in doing everything in our power to make Memphis better for all of us," said Pastor Brandon Walker, Shepherding the Next Generation. "We want all of our neighbors to live in a safe and pristine environment."

"This is our home. This is where we raise our families. This is where we choose to work. So, it's obviously really important for us to be part oft he city beautification effort," said Jeremy Park, Lipscomb and Pitts.

Mayor Wharton says it will take more than just a weekend to tackle the problem. His administration is still working toward other solutions.
