Spotsylvania store clerk, shot in head, speaks out to catch suspect

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Spotsylvania convenience store clerk is speaking out from her hospital bed to help catch the man who shot her twice in the head.

Kelly Wood, 32, survived the point-blank range shooting at a Spotsylvania Fas Mart Saturday morning.

When NBC12 reached out to Wood's husband, Kelly herself was determined to share her story.

"I want this guy to be put in jail," said Wood, who is making dramatic progress in her recovery. She walked Monday.

The mother of three vividly remembers the harrowing moments, which have traumatized her emotionally and physically. Wood says the man entered the store and approached the counter. He asked for an item. As Wood turned her back, he shot her.

"I heard a big bang and I panicked a little," continued Wood, who didn't immediately realize she was shot.

When she ran for the door the suspect pulled the trigger a second time.

"Shot me again," said Wood softly from the hospital bed.

Woods suffered a broken jaw, shattered cheek, and intense swelling. However, she is alive. Wood and her husband, Andrew, are grateful she overcame such unbelievable odds. The couple took a moment to thank the many who have come to their support, loved ones, and the community.

"I'd like to thank the police for trying their best, and I really want to thank VCU because the doctors and the nurses here have been top-notch," said Andrew Wood.

Spotsylvania police say they have leads, but haven't yet identified the suspect.

As the search continues, Kelly Woods will recover and continue to pray. "To catch the guy who did this to me," stated Wood, determined to bring her shooter to justice.

Wood will have to undergo multiple reconstructive surgeries. The Fas Mart on Brock Road where she works is taking up a collection for her and her family.
