KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities are investigating after five dogs were found stuffed into trash bags and illegally dumped in the Northland.

The dogs, which were pit bulls and pit bull mixes, were found off a dirt road near Interstate 35 and Northeast Vivion Road. Kids exploring the area found the dogs.

Kansas City spokesman Chris Hernandez said foul play may have been involved in the deaths.

"There was some indication that they may have been some animal cruelty involved, but that's still under investigation," he said.

City officials received a tip on Tuesday that there were 20 dead dogs in an area of I-35 and North Brighton Avenue. Municipal employees investigated but didn't find anything.

A second call was made on Wednesday after the kids made the upsetting discovery.

One of the dogs did have a microchip. Authorities are working to identify the owners of the dogs.

The area where the dogs were found is known for illegal dumping, and the city has placed hidden cameras in the area.

Hernandez said the city will dispose of dead animals for Kansas City residents. You just have to call 311 to have a crew come and retrieve the dead animal.

If you have any information about the dumping of the dogs and their deaths, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
